A night guard is a type of mouthguard that is commonly used for patients who have a tendency to clench or grind their teeth, a condition known as bruxism. Patients with bruxism tend to clench or grind most often during the first stages of sleep, which can cause extensive damage to the teeth in addition to sleep disruption. Those with bruxism may notice:

• Wear on teeth
• Waking up with dull headaches
• Jaw soreness
• Facial pain
• Fatigue from lack of sleep

Most cases of bruxism can be treated with a night guard that is worn during sleep. Typically made to fit over your upper teeth, a night guard creates a protective barrier between the upper and lower arch and lessens tension in the TMJ by providing a cushion for the muscles and joints. It also protects the teeth from the physical wear that results from grinding, so that instead of wearing down your enamel, you wear the appliance down instead. The most effective and best fitting night guards are custom made by your dentist to specifically fit your unique mouth and teeth. As such, they are more comfortable and easier to wear than over the counter night guards, providing protection for your teeth, reducing pain and soreness, and offering a better night’s sleep for those who suffer from bruxism.
